Forgive the last minute notice, but for anyone who didn't know about this and is interested in participating, there is nationwide rally going on tomorrow - Saturday, November 15th.

You can find out about the rallies in your area on this website:

Proposition 8 passed on election day. It eliminates the rights of same-sex couples to marry. This fight is not over. Many people are doing what they can to return civil rights to all Californians.

P.S. Congratulations Connecticut for acknowledging the rights of same-sex couples to marry.

Im confused Dejeuner. Are you for or against gay marriage? Because I cant tell from your arguments. You seem to be arguing for gay marriage but then youre arguing against people who support it.

Moving on, what does it matter what marriage started out as? It does not that stand for that anymore. It stands, or is supposed to stand, for two people who love each other and want to spend the rest of their lives together. It doesnt matter what it used to be. It changed. As all things should.
I'm glad unityofeffect explained what proposition 8 is, we don't have anything like that in England.
I am also a little confused by some of the arguments here. This is how I see it.
People.
Should have the same rights.
As other people.
Unless they are insane, or murderers, or something like that. But being a homosexual is not wrong, nor is it a world-affecting life choice. And it doesn't matter whether the Bible believes that being a homosexual is wrong, because the Bible doesn't control what becomes law, and it's quite ridiculous in my opinion to think that because the Bible says so everyone else has to do so.
My opinon on gay marriage is immaterial. I belive religion should be kept seperate from politics. Many say it is not possible, but they are wrong. The fight should not be in the legislature for Christian values, but in our home churches and local communities. Morals cannot be legislated. Wether we are discussing homosexuality or abortion or pornagraphy.
Religion of all stripes should be kept out of governmental power. Especially Christianity. The stand out difference in Christianity vs. all other religious theologies is GRACE, when power is the focus and not grace the church has proven to be very ungracious even dangerous. The legalism that is other faiths is what separates them from Christianity and makes them equally temporally dangerous i.e. Saudi Arabia, Somalia ect. But the Christian church in power, like in the Middle Ages, proves to be eternally dangerous as well.
My point that it was originally legal was to say that the "religious" have no higher claim to marriage than the secular. The fact is, it is a small minority of a minority that is seeking this change in the definition of marriage. Now I know how passe the "slippery slope" agrument is, but if we move the line a few inches where do we stop moving it? Why replace one rule with ten or twelve? There are living wills and many legal ways to ensure your loved ones are allowed to do as you would have them do without be "married". I There will be another oppressed group who wants marriage rights standing right behind the door waiting to move the line again. Why can't men have more than one wife? Or women more than one husband, that might be nice one who gets projects finished and one who can cook. Why can't I marry my first cousin? These are all consenting adults in question. I am just looking for everyone to put logical thought into the argument without the religion cop-out or pure emotion.

Senate, Assembly Resolutions Support Invalidation of Proposition 8

“Proposition 8’s revision to the California Constitution violates key structural checks and balances built into our legal system,” said Sen. Leno. “Overnight, the constitutional protections of thousands of tax paying, law abiding California citizens were stripped from them by a simple majority vote, without a prior two-thirds vote by both houses of the legislature, thereby trampling on their fundamental right to equal protection.”

"Any major revision to the state Constitution should not be allowed to circumvent the legal system,” said Assemblymember Ammiano. “The fact is, Proposition 8 was improperly instituted through the ballot process without legislative involvement. I am proud to author this crucial resolution urging the courts to right the social travesty of Proposition 8 and ensure any similar future measures are approached in an appropriate and legal manner."

If it stands, Prop 8 would be the only California initiative to successfully change the California Constitution to take away a right from a targeted minority group.
And for a good laugh, Prop 8 The Musical!
